My daughter AL and her boyfriend NA went to the movies last night. They came home a little after 12 P.M., they went in her bedroom and that is when things got a little strange. Her bedroom door was open; AL and NA kept looking out a side window and listening to something. I ask what they were doing and AL told me there was some animal whining and crying hurt outside her window. AL and NA got a flashlight and went into the rainy night to see what was outside her bedroom; they found a very wet half grown raccoon.
Her boyfriend NA picked the raccoon up with a shovel afraid it would bit him and gently took it to our barn. The raccoon is hurt it has a gash below it’s left eye and one on it’s jaw. The poor little raccoon can’t walk we aren’t sure if it was hit by a car or if another animal attacked it.
We put an old blanket in a big storage container and some milk soaked dog food in a small dish. I picked the raccoon up and placed it on the blanket in the storage container, and placed an old towel over it. My daughter took the raccoon in its nest to her bedroom and tried to sleep but the raccoon had other plans. The raccoon is too weak to get out of the storage container, but it kept making purring clicking noises, so it was moved to our bath tub storage container nest and all.

My husband who knew nothing about our newest animal friend got up to go to work yes he is working on Sunday not something he usually does. He found the raccoon in the bathtub and before he could shower he had to move it. So now the raccoon in the storage container nest was put just outside the door on our back porch.
The raccoon is dry moving around a little bit we aren’t sure if it ate any of the food but I added more warm milk to it this morning. Now what to do? I don’t know how we get ourselves into these kinds of situations but we have. The raccoon seems to be hurt from the gashes but not sick but it’s scared and I am afraid to try to pick it up and doctor it’s wounds.
My daughter has been calling local animal clinics and hospitals trying to find someone who can help the raccoon. So far she has had little luck being Sunday most places are closed and the ones she has talked to don’t work with wild animals.
If anyone has any suggestions please let us know, as we won’t turn the raccoon lose in the condition it’s in. The raccoon seems to be doing better it’s not crying or whining but it needs more medical attention then we are able to give it.

You might try your local gamewarden or game reserve if you have one in your area. Sometimes they care for hurt animals.
Good Luck

My daughter's friend from work has the raccoon, with our dog and cat I don't think it would do to well here, I am sure he is better off with her friend.
A friend of my daughter has the raccoon I think with some rest and food it will be fine. Thanks for your help and stopping by.

We tried our vet and a few close by, they gave us a few numbers but we had no luck getting a hold of anyone. My niece reads my blog and she was showing a house and had a little down time she called and told me of a woman that live’s near by, that has helped her with a few wild animals.
A co-worker friend of my daughter who has some wildlife rehab experience took the raccoon and she told me as you no milk.
I am glad the raccoon was smarter then me because I had no ideal about the milk I just knew the dog food would be too hard. The raccoon is a male and is doing much better. Thanks for your help I will know better what to do for the next little four legged friend we find.
Have a great evening !

Sounds like the coon is gonna do just fine thanks to you,and your kids for helping him! I have rehab many coons through the years. At one time I had around 15 of them from newborns to half grown.
That was quite a task!

Sorry I'm getting this to you so late and I hope by now, the poor little fellow is much better. However, if not, there are some wonderful internet sites on "doctoring" animals if you do a Google search on it. I know they LOVE sweets but don't know how good that would be for him, especially if he's already sick. Keep us posted on how he and you are doing please!

Wow! You have done so much with animals 15 coons at one time that had to take lots of time just to feed the baby ones. I did raise 2 wild ducks but that was easy I just raised them with a batch of baby chickens. I remember my daughters sneaking over to my neighbor’s new pond to let the half grown ducks swim in it. It was funny when the ducks got older I would be feeding the chickens and saying here chick chick and the ducks would fly and circle the yard and come down to eat. Then one fall day they flew off for the winter. They did come back in the spring and make a home in my neighbor’s pond and he has had wild ducks in it every year since.
Have a great day!

Yes it took lots of time to care for all of them. Bottle feeding the newborns was the most time consuming part.I had to at times quit taking in coons because I had all I could take care of. When I was rehabing full time, coons were the number one wild animal I got calls on.
I should have PM ed you about the raccoon I knew you know about animals, I didn't know you did/do all you have done. It's so nice you helping animals, if we find another I will PM you if that is okay. We really don't come across to many that are hurt, we see plenty at night wondering around our house and by the side of the roads.

Your comment was great, it made me smile thinking about you carrying the duck around. It was a really nice thing to do. The raccoon is a male and a friend and co-worker of my daughter took it. She has doctored hurt animals before he is doing well.
Have a great night!
